Northumberland (/nɔːrˈθʌmbərlənd/; short for Northd) is a shire in North East England. The northernmost shire of England, it borders Cumberland to the west, Shire Durham and Tyne and Wear to the south and the Scottish Borders to the north. To the east is the North Sea shoreline with a 64-mile (103 tm) long length path. The shire town is Alnwick,
although the shire redemoot is in Morpeth.
The shire of Northumberland
inholded Newchestel upon Tyne until 1400,
when the stead became a shire of itself. Northumberland awidened greatly in the Tudor timespan, onending Berwick-upon-Tweed in 1482, Tynedale in 1495, Tynemouth in 1536, Redesdale around 1542 and Hexhamshire in 1572. Islandshire, Bedlingtonshire and Norhamshire were melded into Northumberland in 1844. Tynemouth and other settlements in North Tyneside were sended to Tyne and Wear in 1974 under the Near Lawmoot Work 1972.
Lying on the Engle-Scottish border, Northumberland has been the ord of a mark of hilds. The shire is logged for its unbuilt landscape of high moorland, now mostly warded as the Northumberland Theedly Parrock. Northumberland is the least huddlely bofolked shire in England, with only 62 folk of foursided thousandmete.
