The word in Gen 1:6 rendered here as "stronghold" is "fundamentum" in the Biblia Sacra Vulgata. "Fundamentum" is a support, a foundation, especially (but not exclusively) metaphorical as in a foundation or support for an argument or idea. kjv is "firmament." According to strong's concordance, the hebrew is "an expanse", as in something that has been pounded out so that it expands, like a sheet of metal overlaying something. I would like to see how it was rendered in greek for the septuagint but I can't read greek. while I think "stronghold" is not the right word, I'm struggling to find one that is any better. "besmithing"? Here is the verse in greek, can any of you read this καὶ εἶπεν ὁ θεός γενηθήτω στερέωμα ἐν μέσῳ τοῦ ὕδατος καὶ ἔστω διαχωρίζον ἀνὰ μέσον ὕδατος καὶ ὕδατος καὶ ἐγένετο οὕτως . . . how about "spread"? a perfectly good modern english word that comes from an OE root and that means more or less exactly what the hebrew means. I think we have a winner - "spread", not "stronghold" 22.214.171.124 07:24, June 25, 2016 (UTC)
"God's ghost fared over the waters."
Wow! Isn't that so very vivid!

Aye, it is truly lively. --Malirath 16:46, 27 October 2006 (UTC)
God said, "Let there be a growth midst the waters, and let it cleave the waters from the waters."
This is better: God said, "Let there be a growth in the midst of the waters..."
